Protesters in New York City had a loud and clear message for Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other New York Democrats during a press conference regarding the illegal immigration crisis: “Close the border!” they shouted, over and over again. The protesters were so fired up that even AOC’s security personnel had to intervene and move them back. It was quite a scene to behold.

But these protesters weren’t just there to make noise, they had legitimate concerns about the illegal immigration crisis. One protester spoke to The New York Post and shared the story of his wife’s children, who have been waiting in Medellin, Colombia for seven long years to come to the United States legally. He questioned why these children, who have followed all the proper procedures and have not broken any laws, should be denied entry when others are crossing the border illegally.

And he’s not alone in his frustration. Many Americans believe that the country needs to close the border and stop rewarding those who break federal law by crossing into the United States illegally. They argue that by providing benefits and opportunities to those who have entered the country illegally, we are only encouraging more people to do the same.
Representative Ocasio-Cortez did address the issue during the press conference, acknowledging the strain on public systems and expressing support for increased federal resources to help cities and municipalities dealing with the illegal immigration crisis. However, her focus seemed to be more on work authorizations for those who have entered the country illegally, rather than addressing the concerns of those who believe in following the legal process.
It’s clear that there is a deep divide when it comes to the issue of illegal immigration, and this press conference only highlighted that divide. While some may see these protesters as simply “anti-migrant,” it’s important to recognize that their concerns are rooted in a desire to uphold and protect the rule of law. Closing the border may not be the only solution, but it is certainly a valid and important part of the conversation.
The protesters who shouted down Representative Ocasio-Cortez and other New York Democrats are the voice of millions of Americans who are frustrated with our broken immigration system. It’s time for our elected officials to take their concerns seriously and work towards real solutions instead of catering to radical open-border ideologies. It’s clear that a secure border is essential for a strong and prosperous nation, and those who have followed the rules and waited patiently to enter the country legally deserve to be prioritized over those who have taken shortcuts and broken the law. It’s time to restore integrity and order to our immigration system.
