Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom’s latest move to combat crime in Oakland, California has stirred up quite the controversy. Newsom has decided to deploy 480 high-tech surveillance cameras across the city and nearby freeways to keep a watchful eye on residents and track vehicles. These cameras are no ordinary ones; they have the ability to identify and track vehicles by license plate, type, color, and even decals and bumper stickers.

Governor Newsom defends the new surveillance network, claiming it will empower law enforcement to effectively combat criminal activity and ensure safer communities. However, critics accuse him of disregarding privacy rights.
The crime situation in Oakland is undeniably dire. According to an August 2023 report, murders have skyrocketed by 37 percent compared to four years prior, while robberies have surged by 30 percent. Car break-ins have exploded by 40 percent, and car thefts have more than doubled. The situation has become so severe that even the historic In-N-Out Burger franchise closed its only Oakland location due to rampant car break-ins, property damage, theft, and robberies.
The crime wave has left residents living in fear, with the local NAACP reporting that people are scared to even walk to their mailboxes. The dire situation has prompted major employers in downtown Oakland, including Blue Shield of California, Clorox, Kaiser Permanente, and Pacific Gas & Electric, to announce a joint $10 million security program to enhance public safety and safeguard their employees.
