Next Top Gun: Who’ll Step up to Replace McCarthy as Speaker?

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is under fire as Republicans in the House openly search for alternatives to his leadership. While McCarthy may still manage to hold onto his position, the search for alternatives shows that his grip on power is becoming increasingly tenuous. Several figures have been proposed as potential replacements, some of whom may pose a serious challenge to McCarthy.

One potential candidate is House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN), who has garnered favor among conservative members of the House, including the House Freedom Caucus. Emmer is seen as more in line with the interests of conservatives and may be able to deliver better results. However, Emmer has publicly expressed his support for McCarthy, dismissing the idea of replacing him as mere “palace intrigue.” It remains to be seen whether Emmer would truly turn against McCarthy.

Another candidate that has been considered is House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN), who has been approached several times about stepping into the role. Green has been a vocal advocate for the Republican effort to address the situation at the southern border. However, like Emmer, Green has shown no interest in the position. It seems unlikely that he would turn against McCarthy, with whom he reportedly shares a close relationship.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) is also being considered as a potential replacement. Scalise enjoys broad support among Republican lawmakers and may be open to the possibility of taking over from McCarthy. There have been reports of tension between McCarthy and Scalise, which may make Scalise more inclined to seek the top position. However, Scalise’s recent announcement that he will undergo cancer treatment may impact his chances. Some have suggested that a caretaker speaker could hold the position until Scalise completes his treatment.

Finally, Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) has been mentioned as a possible replacement for McCarthy. Bacon is seen as more centrist than the other candidates and may even have support from Democrats. However, Bacon has expressed his support for McCarthy and does not seem interested in the position at this time.

It’s clear that McCarthy is facing significant challenges to his leadership. While there are several potential alternatives, it remains to be seen whether any of them will have the support and momentum to truly pose a threat to McCarthy’s speakership.
