New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy decided to play cheerleader for President Biden during the unveiling of funding for the Gateway Tunnel project into New York City. The Democrat governor, who remains mostly unknown outside of New Jersey, has occasionally been mentioned as a potential stand-in for Biden, assuming the president ever steps down from his much-criticized term.
Murphy poured praise on Biden, crediting him for the $6.8 billion grant approved for the long-overdue infrastructure project. The governor might want us to believe that Biden’s “understanding” of railways is the magic touch needed for the project, conveniently forgetting that basic competence should be a prerequisite for any sitting president. According to Murphy, Biden’s touch is the difference between night and day compared to the previous administration—a statement that’s sure to bring laughs from anyone who remembers how quickly Trump got things done despite a media onslaught.

Nevertheless, Biden, who faced severe backlash after a debate flop against former President Trump, has been seeing his support base eroding. Murphy, along with other Democratic luminaries, still publicly backs Biden. The governor recently held a fundraiser for the beleaguered president, who, at 81, acknowledged his dismal performance and promised to “fight harder.” If fighting harder means hiding from reality, then Biden certainly excels.
Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler also attended the Gateway Tunnel event and thanked the Biden administration and members like Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Nadler’s gratitude comes with a heavy dose of irony, considering he was one of the Democrats who told party leaders that Biden should reconsider his reelection bid. This is like watching a circus act where the performers applauding the ringmaster are the same ones hoping he’ll retire before the next show.
In summary, the Democrat leadership continues its charade: praising each other in public while nervously whispering about Biden’s weaknesses behind closed doors. Murphy’s endorsement of Biden over a simple infrastructure project may appease a few, but it won’t mask the growing calls for a change at the top.
