Pentagon Raises Alert Level on European Bases After Biden Debate Performance

The heightened protection level for U.S. military bases in Europe following President Joe Biden’s lackluster debate performance against former President Donald Trump has sparked concerns about national security. Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh attributed the increased security measures to various factors, emphasizing that it was a precautionary step. She deferred further inquiries to the European Command for specifics on the force protection measures.

The decision to raise the protection level was deemed necessary by Army Gen. Christopher Cavoli to enhance vigilance for service members and their families. Trump Campaign Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt drew a direct connection between Biden’s debate performance and the perceived heightened terrorist threat, suggesting that adversaries are exploiting America’s perceived weakness on the global stage.

Military bases in Europe, including the Stuttgart Army garrison and others in Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, and Italy, were placed under condition “Charlie,” the second-highest threat level. The directive warns of potential terrorist actions or targeting against personnel and facilities. Troops in Italy were advised against wearing uniforms to and from work as a security precaution.

FBI Director Christopher Wray previously alerted Congress to the increased risk of a terrorist attack in the United States following calls for violence from various foreign terrorist organizations. The concern is that individuals or small groups may be emboldened to carry out attacks inspired by events in the Middle East. This situation underscores the importance of remaining vigilant and ensuring the safety and security of military personnel and assets.
