Senator Rand Paul recently made a bold statement regarding Denver Mayor Mike Johnston’s potential resistance to President-elect Donald Trump’s much-anticipated deportation policies. On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Paul detailed the serious implications of a mayor daring to defy federal law in a move that seems to dance dangerously close to insurrection. One might wonder if Mayor Johnston needs a history lesson on the supremacy of federal law—or perhaps just a firm reminder that attempting to play fast and loose with such laws could lead to a one-way ticket out of office.

With sympathetic poll numbers showing a staggering 57% of voters supporting Trump’s deportation plans, it seems Johnston’s liberal ideas don’t sit well with most Americans. So, when he decides to dig his heels in and resist necessary federal measures, it’s akin to testing the winds of history—and they’re blowing southward for partisan defiance. It’s no secret this mayor’s potential obstructionism could pave a pathway straight to the Supreme Court, where precedent suggests he doesn’t stand a chance.

It appears Paul firmly believes that the inevitable legal repercussions await Johnston if he chooses insubordination over compliance. Furthermore, there are very real risks for Johnston, who, if not careful, could find himself facing a whole new occupation—job hunting. It seems practically preordained that such defiance would culminate in his removal from office. In a nation that values law and order, after all, there’s a clear expectation that everyone, even progressive city mayors, will adhere to the rules, especially when they come from Washington.
In short, this situation serves as a sobering reminder of the repercussions that can follow a flagrant disregard of federal authority. One can imagine the looks on the faces of voters as they watch a mayor who could pass for a contestant on “America’s Got Bad Decisions,” teeter on the edge of legal trouble while his constituents grapple with the reality of increased crime. The voters deserve leaders who respect their wishes and the law, not showboating politicians trying to make headlines from the comfort of their mayoral office.
