Senator Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) recent insights on the Israel-Hamas conflict have certainly ruffled some feathers, and not just on the left. From his refusal to jump on the ceasefire bandwagon to his critique of United Nations resolutions, Sanders’ commentary has made quite the impact.
One particularly controversial take of his was regarding a permanent ceasefire with Hamas. Sanders rightly pointed out that it’s hard to negotiate a lasting truce with a group like Hamas, which has openly declared its intent to destroy Israel. In a rare moment of agreement, Sanders even earned praise from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel political action committee.

Despite the widespread calls for a ceasefire, including from members of the Squad, Sanders stood firm in his support for Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas. He also expressed hope for a humanitarian pause in the conflict, emphasizing the distinction between targeting Hamas and the Palestinian people.
Moreover, Sanders didn’t mince words when it came to criticizing Israel’s military actions under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership. He urged the U.S. to pressure Israel to halt its “disastrous military approach” and voiced concerns over providing further financial aid for the conflict.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Antony Blinken echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that a Hamas surrender would swiftly end the conflict. He also spoke out against a United Nations ceasefire resolution, arguing that it would only perpetuate the problem.
It’s not just about Israel, though. Congress has been grappling with the issue of aid to both Israel and Ukraine, with some Republicans advocating for linking the two. In the midst of these deliberations, the House passed a standalone bill to provide aid to Israel, but Senate Democrats have repeatedly rejected it.
With these ongoing debates, the question remains: will the Senate prioritize aid to Israel and Ukraine, or will they head home for Christmas? The battle over aid packages continues, and the stakes are high for all parties involved.
