SCOTUS Divided on Big Tech Censorship: Free Speech at Risk in Murthy v. Missouri?

The Supreme Court recently listened to arguments in a pivotal case regarding the government’s push to force social media platforms to silence voices and opinions that don’t align with the government’s policies. This case, previously known as Biden v. Missouri but now referred to as Murthy v. Missouri, has serious implications for free speech and government overreach.

From a conservative perspective, it’s deeply concerning that the Biden administration is trying to strong-arm big tech companies into censoring content that they deem unfavorable. Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of American democracy, and any attempt to curb it, especially by the government, should be met with skepticism and resistance.

During the court proceedings, the justices appeared divided on whether the government’s actions amounted to coercion or were simply an effort to ensure public safety. Justice Kentanji Brown Jackson, a Biden appointee, raised eyebrows with her comments suggesting that the government has a duty to suppress “harmful information.” This kind of thinking is dangerous as it could easily lead to the suppression of any dissenting voices that the government deems inconvenient.

The lower court records paint a clear picture of government officials actively working with social media platforms to target and silence certain content. Allowing this behavior to go unchecked sets a dangerous precedent where the government could regularly suppress viewpoints it disagrees with, infringing on the fundamental right to freedom of speech.

It’s both outrageous and alarming that a Supreme Court Justice would argue in favor of giving the government more power to silence opposition. The First Amendment explicitly protects against government interference in speech, and any attempts to erode that protection should be met with staunch opposition.

In a time where free speech is under constant threat from censorship and cancel culture, it’s crucial to uphold the principles of the First Amendment and push back against any encroachments on our rights. The government’s role should be to protect and defend free speech, not to undermine it for its own agenda. The outcome of this case will have far-reaching implications for the future of free speech in America, and it’s essential that the court upholds the values of liberty and freedom that our nation was founded upon.
