Senate GOP Girds for Clash on Democrat-Led Legislative Push

Senators returned to Washington, D.C. this week with a packed agenda before their upcoming July 4th recess. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has outlined several contentious issues that Senate Democrats hope to tackle in the coming days.

One of the top issues aligns with President Joe Biden’s call to reinstate a ban on gun bump stocks following a recent Supreme Court decision that invalidated the previous federal law. However, Schumer’s plan faces opposition from Republican senators who have the power to block the measure.

Additionally, Schumer is advancing a bill to codify Roe v. Wade into federal law, aiming to enshrine abortion protections, despite the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s overturning of the landmark case on June 22.

Another Democratic push involves repealing the Comstock Act of 1873, which prohibits the mailing of materials for abortions, including drugs like mifepristone. Senator Tina Smith plans to introduce a bill repealing the decades-old law to safeguard access to abortion pills by mail.

Lastly, Senate Democrats are expected to narrowly confirm a controversial judicial nominee, Mustafa Taher Kasubhai, for the District of Oregon. Kasubhai’s nomination has faced opposition from Republicans who consider him unqualified due to past controversial statements about heterosexual relationships.

As Senate Democrats forge ahead with their election-year agenda, they face resistance from Republicans, who are poised to challenge and block several key measures.
