Senator Murphy Blames Trump For Political Violence Ignores Own Party’s Protest History

Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut recently decided to take a break from his usual constituency work to deliver a fiery monologue about the state of political violence in America, and who better to blame than President Donald Trump? Appearing on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” Murphy asserted that Trump had somehow “legitimized” political violence against Democrats. It’s an interesting take, considering Democrats have been openly discussing the merits of peaceful protests all while some of their own have been involved in decidedly unpeaceful riots.

When Murphy was pressed on the topic of pardons related to the January 6 incident, his dramatic flair kicked in as he described the “nefarious” characters being released from prison. Apparently, individuals who pepper-sprayed police officers, resulting in serious injuries and even heart attacks, are part of Murphy’s pantheon of villains. Forget that the very nature of civil disobedience has historically involved a good deal of passion—now it’s categorized as an outright assault against democracy, triggered chiefly by the former president’s alleged endorsement of this behavior.

Murphy painted a picture of violent insurrectionists, obsessed with “beating the hell out of police officers” and incapable of embracing civility. Conveniently glossing over the fact that many who participated in the January 6th protests were simply looking for a chance to voice their concerns, he insisted that these folks arrived in Washington with a bloodthirsty agenda. The irony is palpable; Americans have witnessed plenty of violence under the guise of protest in recent years, yet it seems to vanish into the ether of the mainstream narrative when it doesn’t fit a specific agenda.

In Murphy’s world, Trump’s perceived leniency towards rioters sets a dangerous precedent. He warned of a dystopian future where Democrats are brutally terrorized in the streets, all because Trump allegedly gave the green light to violence through his pardons. There’s no denying that political tensions run high in the current environment, but pinning the blame squarely on Trump’s actions overlooks the complexities and nuances of a very charged political climate. Perhaps the violent rioters should also be held responsible for their actions and decisions that led to their arrests in the first place.

Murphy concluded his alarmist commentary by invoking a tragic narrative where the very fabric of democracy is at stake, all thanks to Trump’s “excessive” pardons. Yet somehow, in this grand tale of doom and gloom, Murphy and his allies are blissfully ignoring the bouts of violence that have marked certain protests in their own ranks. Instead of taking a step back and recognizing that accountability must be shared among all political actors, they continue to deflect and deploy the same tired fearmongering tactics designed to keep their base agitated. Who needs unity when you have a narrative to peddle?
