OceanGate, the operator of the missing Titanic tourism submarine, is currently facing scrutiny after their CEO, Stockton Rush, made discriminatory comments about older white men. Rush was reported to have said that OceanGate didn’t want to hire any older white men since they lacked inspiration, as seen from the company’s sub operators out there, who are typically retired military men or 50-year-old white guys. Rush reportedly stated that he wanted his team to be younger because they were more inspiring.

These unprofessional comments by Rush have raised concerns among the public about the legality of his hiring processes and the qualifications of the people operating such critical machinery. Rush’s negligence has resulted in the disaster happening in Titanic tourism, with five people missing on board the Titan. Among the five missing is Rush himself, along with a French Navy veteran PH Nargeolet, and a frantic search and rescue operation is underway to locate the vessel before its 96-hour oxygen supply runs out.
OceanGate’s decision to discriminate against 50-year-old white guys based on their age and gender is a clear indication of their poor management skills and lack of judgment. The company’s decision to hire less experienced and younger people over experienced and seasoned professionals seems shortsighted and reckless, given the high stakes of operating a submarine at the depths the Titan is currently at.
Rush’s comments and the current disaster raise serious concerns about the lack of regulation and oversight in the submarine tourism industry. It is imperative that the government establishes more stringent regulations and safety protocols to prevent such disasters from happening in the future. Such a critical industry needs competent and experienced professionals who prioritize safety and responsibility over superficial factors such as age and race.
