Oh, Canada! It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of acclaimed Canadian violinist Ji Soo Choi at the tender age of 28. This young classical prodigy, who hailed from Oakville, Ontario, lost her life after a valiant battle with lymphoma. It’s truly tragic to see someone so full of talent and promise taken from us so soon.
Ji Soo Choi’s manager, Megan Jones, paid tribute to her in a heartfelt statement. She described Ji Soo as a “popular and devoted colleague” who always played with “profound passion and joy.” Wow, what a dedicated musician! With her Juilliard education and a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree under her belt, Ji Soo was destined for greatness. It’s a shame that her shining career has been abruptly cut short.

This violin virtuoso made waves in the music industry from a young age, winning prestigious competitions and garnering recognition as an exceptional soloist and chamber musician. She even had the honor of performing at the Music Mondays series hosted by CBC Radio 2 back in 2015. Being selected for such an event is no small feat, and Ji Soo’s talent shone through as she performed in the historic Church of the Holy Trinity. It’s no wonder she was considered one of the “30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians under 30” by CBC.
Ji Soo Choi’s impact reached far beyond the stage and into the lives of her students. She was not only a remarkable performer but also a passionate teacher. In her own words, teaching violin allowed her to share her knowledge and experience, and to encourage others to embrace their interest in music. As a staunch advocate for the arts, she believed in expanding creativity through the universal language of music. We need more dedicated educators like Ji Soo, who inspire future generations to dream big and pursue their passions.
The loss of Ji Soo Choi has struck a chord not only with her family but also with the countless relatives, friends, and admirers who were touched by her brilliance. A celebration of her life was held on July 29th, where loved ones gathered in the Oakville area to remember and honor this extraordinary talent. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, especially her brother Dexter, who will undoubtedly miss her dearly.
In times like these, we are reminded of the fragility of life, and the importance of cherishing every moment and opportunity.
