President Biden’s recent claim that he has delegated “everything” to Harris, including significant aspects of foreign and domestic policy, creates an unsettling image of a vice president walking a fine line between being a puppet and a bystander. Many critics view Harris as someone who merely says what her constituents want to hear, a political chameleon willing to trade away the concerns of average Americans just to stay in the good graces of those who pull the strings.
Polling data aligns with these criticisms, indicating that nearly half of Americans suspect that Harris lacks genuine convictions, instead opting for whatever is politically expedient. While a mere 36 percent believe she articulates her true beliefs, a whopping 48 percent think she’s more interested in playing to public sentiment than addressing the actual issues facing the nation. It seems many are aware that when it comes to substance, Harris may be more fluff than fierce.
Despite holding the record for the lowest net approval rating of any vice president in history, her recent approval rating spike to 48 percent raises eyebrows. The supposed surge, a leap of 16 points within two months, begs the question of what really changed. Some assert that the media machine is working overtime to repackage Harris, feeding her narrative to an unsuspecting public as if the previous years of indecision and blunders didn’t happen at all. Hypothetically, if a VP’s worth were measured in actual performance rather than media spin, Harris would likely still be at rock bottom.
