President Trump recently spoke out against former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, declaring that they both have “ZERO chance” in the 2024 Republican primary race. Trump blasted Christie for his sloppy governance as Governor and his dismal 9% approval rating, while he called Sununu a little-known governor who never helps anyone but himself. Trump went on to say that potential challengers are wasting their time and money and have no chance at winning.

These remarks come in the midst of reports that Chris Christie is planning to announce his presidential bid which could further divide the Republican party. However, Trump remains enormously popular, with a recent poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University showing that 70% of Republicans in New Jersey support him. In contrast, 69% of these Republicans said they would not consider supporting Christie.
I will not seek the Republican nomination for president in 2024.
The stakes are too high for a crowded field to hand the nomination to a candidate who earns just 35 percent of the vote, and I will help to ensure this does not happen.

Meanwhile, Chris Sununu, who announced that he was officially refraining from participating in the race, said that Trump was doing much better in the polls than expected. He stated that he wants more young Republicans in the party and is tired of losing elections. He believes that the Republican Party should be about the Party rather than just the former President.
The Republican National Committee has also made the criteria for the first GOP presidential debate clear. Candidates must either poll at least one percent in three national polls or one percent in two national polls and garner one percent support in an early state survey meeting RNC requirements.
With Trump’s formidable influence over the Republican Party, it seems unlikely that either Chris Christie or Chris Sununu will be able to successfully challenge him for the nomination. Trump’s popularity and ability to draw in young and energetic Republicans will likely be a significant factor in the upcoming presidential primary.
