With classic flair, Trump characterized Baier’s probing as “tough but very fair,” a standard that many would argue ‘the other side’ rarely enjoys. It’s refreshing to see that at least Fox News is holding politicians accountable, unlike some other networks that specialize in fluff pieces and gentle questionings. Trump highlighted that even the U.S. Border Patrol, clearly yearning for more competent leadership, gave him a glowing endorsement, while Harris received a less-than-flattering performance review.
What’s even better is Trump’s suggestion that Harris undergo a cognitive test for the good of the nation. This not-so-subtle jab is indicative of a larger sentiment among conservatives who worry that the current administration isn’t quite… all there. It raises the question of whether the nation can really trust someone whose grasp on reality seems as tenuous as a two-legged chair in a windy storm.
In the modern era of political advertising and media strategy, the Trump campaign wasted no time repurposing Baier’s interview, marketing it as their “newest ad.” It’s almost ironic that Harris, who has bungled so many public appearances, has now become a central character in the Trump campaign’s playbook. The Democrats must be thrilled—who knew bad press could be a gift from above?
All in all, the interview resounded loudly with those who enjoy a good political brawl. Baier demonstrated that not all journalists are looking for the soft spot; some are willing to step into the ring and throw punches, even against the vice president herself. If this is the type of candor viewers can expect going forward, it appears Harris—and by extension, her party—has a lot more nightmares ahead.
