However, in the age of new media, it’s doubtful that many in the conservative camp are giving a second thought to the once mighty news network. Ratings continue to plummet, and with audiences flocking to alternative news sources that align more with traditional values, calling out MSNBC might feel a bit like shooting fish in a barrel—particularly when Trump himself pointed out that hardly anyone is tuning in anymore.
The irony is rich. As Trump took a moment to bask in the joy of MSNBC’s declining relevance, Joy Reid found herself reportedly in tears during a Zoom call, lamenting the loss of her position and openly expressing her belief that her work had value. In a moment that would make any fair-minded viewer shake their head in disbelief, she said she didn’t regret her critical stance towards Trump. Her emotional outpouring served as a fitting example of why she may no longer have a place on the airwaves—she rambled on about her commitment to tackling social justice issues, but it was hard to reconcile her tone with the notion of responsible journalism.
