In a surprising twist, former President Donald Trump is publicly distancing himself from Sidney Powell, the disbarred lawyer who recently pleaded guilty in Fani Willis’ 2020 election case. Trump took to his new social media platform, Truth Social, to clarify that Powell never officially represented him. He staunchly maintains his innocence in the charges brought against him by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
In his Truth Social post, President Trump stated, “Despite the Fake News reports to the contrary, and without even reaching out to ask the Trump Campaign, MS. POWELL WAS NOT MY ATTORNEY, AND NEVER WAS.” He also acknowledged that Powell was correct in her belief that the 2020 election was stolen by President Joe Biden.

On the other side, Willis accused Powell of conspiring with others to tamper with Georgia’s voting machines and manipulate the ballot results. Powell was one of many who believed that the election was rigged and stolen from Trump. In a plea deal, Powell agreed to testify against President Trump and others if their cases go to trial. Notably, she will avoid prison time in exchange for community service and public apology letters.
The prosecution of President Trump at the state level is causing strain on the court system. DA Willis attempted to prosecute all defendants concurrently but was rejected. Meanwhile, Trump’s supporters have come out in large numbers, protesting outside the sheriff’s office where Trump’s mugshot was taken. Willis faces scrutiny for leaving defendants in poor jail conditions and allegedly using her position to boost her reelection campaign. There are even calls for her impeachment, and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan has pledged to investigate her potential coordination with the Biden Justice Department.
In response, President Trump has been holding massive fundraisers to support his co-defendants. This case has become a major focal point of politics in Georgia and has further divided the nation on the issues surrounding the 2020 election.
