The results of the 2024 election have been officially certified, and in a twist that would make even the most skeptical of individuals throw their hands up in disbelief, Donald J. Trump is set to take the helm as the 47th President of the United States. Contrary to any fears of chaos akin to the January 6 happenings of 2021, the certification process this time was as calm as a summer’s day at Mar-a-Lago. Biden’s detractors, even the most fervent, couldn’t whip up any controversy surrounding Trump’s clear victory in both the popular vote and the Electoral College. Maybe it’s all that coffee from Trump Tower that’s giving folks clarity.
Unlike the shenanigans that marred the 2020 election, there were no shifty dealings or smoke-filled backrooms to question this time around. President Biden, who was more known for his gaffes than for any significant accomplishments, has been dispatched, and while one might wish for a dramatic exit, it was rather the Democratic Party’s own internal discord that did him in. In an unprecedented coup, the party’s top brass managed to sideline Biden by summer, serving as the perfect prelude to Trump’s return. Who knew the DNC was a better soap opera than anything on daytime television?

The most delicious part of this political pie is the reaction of the left. In an incredibly rare display of what they call “democratic grace,” no Democrats dared to throw a tantrum during the certification process. This resulted in a rare moment of bipartisan compliance not seen since George H.W. Bush’s coronation back in 1989. Political pundits like Scott Jennings celebrated this spectacle and wondered aloud whether liberals might actually be growing up—though it’s as likely as Biden reading a prompter without going off-script.
Historically, the Democrats have been notorious for throwing tantrums when their opponents win. They objected not once but twice to Bush’s triumphs in the 2000 and 2004 elections and even tried to tear down Trump’s 2016 win piece by piece. It begs the question: is this newfound restraint a genuine sign of respect for the electoral process, or are they just running low on their usual supply of chaos? Perhaps theater has become too tiresome for them. More likely, they know they’d get more than just a few boo-hisses from the American public if they dared.
In a mind-boggling twist, CNN’s Jake Tapper, typically known for his elbows-deep political analysis, made a nod towards the conspiracies surrounding electoral integrity. He suggested that while the gullible believe elections were stolen in 2004 and 2024, at least those expressing such views were enthusiastic about their convictions. This sends the reassuring message that trust in democracy is at an all-time high, as long as one mingles around conspiracy theories like they’re the social elite at a cocktail party. In summary, the Democrats may have finally learned to navigate the delicate dance of democracy. But will they keep their dancing shoes polished, or will they waltz right back into pandemonium? Only time will tell.
