Donald Trump’s impending victory next month promises to be a landmark event for America, but beyond the headlines, there’s a little extra icing on the cake: the potential demise of Kamala Harris and, with her, the waning star power of Barack and Michelle Obama.
Let’s remember, Barack Obama has been both a puppet master and a cheerleader behind the scenes, pressuring Joe Biden to step aside in favor of Harris, who was never really the first choice for the Democrats. Now, he’s out stumping for her, but the results are less than stellar. Take his recent attempt to rev up black voter support in Pennsylvania—only it backfired spectacularly. Obama’s condescending remarks were labeled as sexist and even a touch racist. In his effort to shame black men into voting for Harris, he implied that their preference for Trump makes them less masculine, which is a real head-scratcher considering it was supposed to rally support, not alienate potential voters.

The more Obama tries to help Harris, the more it seems that he doesn’t really believe in her capacity to lead. If he were confident in her credentials, would he need to resort to identity politics? His rather desperate speech underscored his realization that Harris’s time in office has not yielded any tangible results for black Americans. It seems he forgot to bring the actual evidence that would prop up her record as a solid candidate.
Then, there’s Michelle Obama, stepping up to her husband’s defense in a rally for Harris and getting herself mixed into some troublesome commentary. The frustration was palpable as she ranted about America’s inability to appreciate Harris, stating she laid awake at night questioning the close race. Ironically, Michelle was frantic about Trump’s “gross incompetence” while her husband’s prior political missteps have been glossed over. All this while Trump, who has been dubbed incompetent, just conducted a three-hour interview with Joe Rogan that the Harris camp declined to participate in. Talk about a classic case of denial.
Harris has been relegated to the role of supporting actress in her own campaign, relying heavily on the glow of celebrity endorsements and the Obamas. Not surprisingly, this strategy has failed to resonate. If she loses, it won’t just be about her lackluster candidacy; it will also be a clear indictment of the Obamas’ diminishing effectiveness in the political arena. After all, if Barack couldn’t pull off a victory for Hillary Clinton in 2016, why should he be able to do it for Harris now?
With Trump positioned for a win, the Democratic stalwarts could very well find themselves wondering where all that star power went. The outcome of this election could not only define the political landscape for years to come, but it may also signal the beginning of a significant decline in the Obamas’ influence within their own party. If that’s not an incentive to vote for Trump, what is?
