The ambush itself was not a spontaneous eruption of righteous outrage but a tactical operation: fireworks used as a diversion, militants dressed in black bloc, AR-style rifles reported at the scene, and an Alvarado police officer shot in the neck. That kind of premeditated violence aimed at federal officers and a DHS facility is the very definition of domestic terrorism and must be treated as such by prosecutors and politicians alike.
On November 19, five defendants — Nathan Baumann, Joy Gibson, Seth Sikes, Lynette Sharp and John Thomas — entered guilty pleas to providing material support to terrorists, admitting facts that tie them to an Antifa-affiliated operative cell that planned and executed the attack. These plea agreements include stipulated facts describing encrypted communications, reconnaissance, and coordination, undercutting the narrative that Antifa is merely a harmless ideology or a hashtag.
This case lands squarely in the wake of President Trump’s executive actions targeting Antifa as a domestic terrorist threat, and it vindicates the administration’s insistence that left-wing militancy must be disrupted with the full force of federal law. The left will howl about civil liberties and “decentralized movements,” but the American people deserve protection from ideologies that organize to terrorize law enforcement and undermine public safety.
The Department of Justice’s indictment and subsequent guilty pleas show Antifa operatives can and do form cells that recruit, arm, and coordinate attacks — precisely the kind of behavior the federal terror statutes were meant to punish.
