AOC’s Bigotry Accusations Fail to Drown Out Common Sense on Women’s Sports Bill

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, flinging accusations like confetti, didn’t hold back when she labeled 218 of her colleagues “bigots” after the Republican-led House voted to ban biological males from participating in women’s sports at federally funded schools. This uproar followed a decision that bolstered the idea that fairness and safety in athletics should come before any feel-good ideology. The vote was overwhelmingly in favor, with two Democrats breaking ranks to join the Republicans, while one opted to dodge a definitive stance by voting “present.” Looks like even a few Democrats are able to recognize which way the wind is blowing—unfortunately, AOC seems to have forgotten that basic reality.

In the previous Congress, this same legislation barely squeaked through with a 219 to 203 vote, entirely on party lines, but had the unfortunate fate of being ignored by the Democrat-controlled Senate. Fast forward to now, and Republicans are riding the wave of growing public support for banning men from competing against women and minors undergoing gender reassignment surgeries. Recent polling shows that a whopping 69 percent of Americans are in favor of keeping sports fair, which has quite the ring to it when compared to Ocasio-Cortez’s loud dissent. One can almost hear the collective “who knew?” from people realizing that basic biological truths resonate with the general populace more than progressive rhetoric.

The freshly passed bill is a straightforward affair: it would prevent “transgender women and girls” from competing on athletic teams that align with their “gender identity.” If approved further, the legislation would modify federal law to ensure that someone’s sex is based solely on their reproductive biology and genetics at birth. While Title IX was designed to combat discrimination in education based on sex, President Biden’s grand attempt to reinterpret it to protect transgender individuals was recently nixed by a federal judge. It seems common sense and a commitment to truth still have some legal clout.

House Speaker Mike Johnson articulated a perspective that resonates not only in the chambers of Congress but also in the hearts of everyday Americans. He underscored that this initiative aligns with common sense and natural law—clearly stating that men can’t magically become women. The Speaker pointed out that allowing biological men to compete against women not only jeopardizes the competitive balance in sports but also poses safety risks for young female athletes. It’s a sad day when basic facts require affirmation, but it seems the truth is often the first casualty in politically charged discussions.

While AOC rants about bigotry, more rational voices are emerging from within her party. Even some Democrats are starting to question the extreme left’s approach to this issue, which could signal a brewing storm in future campaigns—a storm that may ironically blow AOC’s narratives into oblivion. Representatives like Colin Allred have voiced opposition to men competing against women, and though Seth Moulton drew fire for poking at the prevailing social issue narrative, he bravely spoke out for fairness in sports. The fact that Moulton didn’t vote for the ban this time around points to a growing discomfort within the party—one that AOC seems blissfully oblivious to as she continues her echoing outcries against sanity itself.
