Biden Admin to Release 1 Million Barrels from Reserves Ahead of Summer Travel Season

The Biden administration announced on Tuesday that the Department of Energy’s Office of Petroleum Reserves plans to sell one million barrels of gasoline from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve in the upcoming summer months. This amount equals to about 42 million gallons of fuel. The decision, as stated by the Energy Department, is aimed at reducing gasoline prices and assisting Americans as they travel during the summer, which conveniently aligns with the months leading up to November’s election.

The Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve was established after Hurricane Sandy caused disruptions in supply chains and triggered gas shortages, rather than for the purpose of helping Democrats lower prices before contentious elections. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm emphasized the administration’s commitment to lowering prices at the pump for American families, especially during the summer driving season, despite the contradicting effects of the administration’s energy policies. Since Biden took office, average prices have risen by 20 percent according to the latest inflation report.

Granholm reiterated that the release of emergency reserves from Memorial Day through the Fourth of July is a strategic move to ensure sufficient supply flow to the tri-state and northeast regions when hardworking Americans need it the most. This release of emergency gasoline stockpiles comes after the Biden administration’s policies have caused gas prices to reach an all-time high in June 2022 and currently remain higher than they were one year ago, coinciding with the final stretch of the 2024 campaign.

Additionally, the Biden administration’s commitment to lowering prices is further questioned by Energy Secretary Granholm’s response to inquiries about increasing oil production to reduce costs. In response, Granholm laughed and commented, “That is hilarious!” This reaction undermines the sincerity of the administration’s pledge to provide relief for Americans facing high gasoline prices.
