The latest stunt from the Biden administration involves granting clemency to a Chinese national who clearly took a scenic route to criminality before landing himself in a heap of trouble. Shanlin Jin, a man who has a talent for accumulating child pornography in the tens of thousands, is now getting a cozy exit from a 97-month prison sentence, courtesy of a government more focused on kindness than on keeping the public safe from future dangers.
Jin was caught with a staggering collection, reported to include 47,000 images and videos—among them, horrifying depictions of infants suffering sexual violence. One would assume this would automatically place someone firmly in the “unforgivable” category, but the Biden administration has other plans. With a sweeping clemency initiative that seems to treat justice as more of a buffet—where they just pick and choose who gets clemency—Jin is one of the beneficiaries. His prison term has now been reduced to time served, as long as he agrees to some relatively fluffy conditions, including immediate deportation. It’s almost as if the administration believes upholding the rule of law can take a backseat when it comes to the interests of foreign nationals.
In a twist straight out of a poorly conceived soap opera, Jin is also banned from profiting off any media related to his own depraved actions. It’s their way of saying, “You can go, but please don’t make a movie about your crimes.” Meanwhile, America is still scratching its head at how someone like Jin, who moved to the U.S. for a bright future in economics, ended up with a dark past as a collecting aficionado of abhorrent images. Clearly, that PhD program was not inclusive enough in addressing morality.
The cherry on top of this fiasco is that Jin’s family has ties to influential members of the Communist Party in China. It begs the question: How far does the Biden administration’s commitment to international relationships trump national safety? Because it appears that removing a man with known past crimes back to his home country has been branded a success by China, with officials patting themselves on the back for finding a way to bring their wayward citizen back into the fold.

As if this wasn’t puzzling enough, Chinese officials continue to push narratives of victimhood, insisting that America had unjustly held their citizens. The term “human rights” seems to take a backseat when those rights are grossly violated back home. The administration’s decision sending Jin back has undoubtedly added fuel to the fire of debate about the effectiveness and appropriateness of clemency in extreme cases.
In conclusion, the Biden administration’s approach to criminal justice could leave anyone shaking their head, if not laughing hysterically at the absurdity of the situation. While regular Americans are burdened with a sobering faith in the justice system, the elite in Washington sound more like they should be running a philanthropy that dabbles in child safety and not mucking around with the lives of those who prey on the innocent.
