The liberal Biden administration made a boneheaded mistake by lifting sanctions against the Institute of Forensic Science (IFS) at China’s Ministry of Public Security. This ridiculous move came after Chinese dictator Xi Jinping promised to crack down on fentanyl production.

The Biden team was quick to boast about this blunder as a major breakthrough, claiming that China’s promise to prevent fentanyl trafficking and restoring direct communications between Chinese and American military forces were huge achievements. However, it seems they forgot that these are the same folks who have been complicit in human rights abuses against Uighurs and other Muslim minority groups in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.
The U.S. Commerce Department rightly sanctioned the IFS and eight other entities for their involvement in China’s campaign of repression and forced labor against these minority groups. But now, the Biden administration conveniently looks the other way and tries to justify this indefensible decision as a means to encourage China to do more against fentanyl. What a weak and spineless move!
The State Department tried to downplay the IFS’s human rights violations, claiming that lifting the sanctions was a necessary step to save American lives by securing cooperation with China on fentanyl trafficking. What they conveniently forgot to mention is that they have no real reason to believe that the IFS is no longer involved in these egregious human rights violations. It’s clear that the Biden administration is willing to sacrifice the Uighurs’ well-being for some flimsy promises from China.
The Chinese state media predictably celebrated the lifting of sanctions, with the Global Times essentially telling the U.S. to stop complaining about human rights if it expects any favors from China. They even had the audacity to blame the U.S. for the fentanyl crisis, claiming that the root cause lies within America itself. What a load of nonsense!
It’s disgraceful to see the Biden administration bending over backwards to appease the Chinese regime while turning a blind eye to their atrocities. This decision sets a dangerous precedent and sends the message that the U.S. is willing to compromise its values for a fleeting illusion of cooperation. The American people deserve better than this weak-kneed leadership.
