President Biden has taken a bold step in his latest political adventure by calling for radical changes to the Supreme Court. He dangerously claims that its “extreme opinions” impede Americans’ freedoms and argues for new regulations like term limits for justices and a more rigid code of ethics. One might think that rather than seeking to fix a problem, Biden is simply laying out plans for a leftist takeover of a court that dares to disagree with him.
Not one to let her boss go it alone, Vice President Kamala Harris, who seems to be warming up for her own run in 2024, jumped in to support Biden’s proposed overhaul. Her concerns focus on what she describes as a “clear crisis of confidence” in the court—a crisis that, ironically, seems to be largely manufactured by Democrats upset over the court’s conservative leanings. With such enthusiasm, one might wonder if she sees the Supreme Court as an extension of the Democratic Party rather than an independent branch of government.

During a speech in Texas, Biden rattled off a list of Supreme Court rulings he finds objectionable, framing the justices as rogue ideologues bent on pushing a conservative agenda. Among these decisions are those granting substantial immunity to presidents and, of course, the historic overturning of Roe v. Wade. The irony is thick, as he complains about “extreme opinions” while failing to acknowledge that many Americans have long been clamoring for such conservative principles. To him, a bad decision is only a decision that doesn’t align with his own worldview.
The proposal isn’t just impractical; it’s politically motivated. With Congress split narrowly, there’s hardly a chance these changes will get anywhere, which begs the question—what’s the point? It’s clear that this is just a tactic to energize the Democrats’ base as they prepare for the next election cycle. House Speaker Mike Johnson has called out Biden’s efforts as a blatant attempt to “delegitimize” the court and undermine faith in American justice. The gall to alter a system that has been in place since the nation’s founding simply because they disagree with a few rulings is a testament to how desperate Democrats are to regain control.
In a further show of irony, Biden linked his proposal to the ongoing fight for civil rights, claiming that reforms are necessary to restore trust in the court. He reasons that a lifetime appointment allows presidents to unduly influence the Supreme Court long after leaving office, an argument that conveniently overlooks the fact that they want to discard the very balance of power that has served as a cornerstone of American democracy. With term limits and enforced ethics codes for justices, it appears that Democrats are primarily concerned about justices enforcing laws they don’t like.
So, while the court may be under fire from disgruntled Democrats, it is clear that they are willing to go to great lengths to reshape it in their ideological image. The left’s anger seems to be less about justice and more about cementing their political agenda—an agenda that has not resonated with the majority of Americans. The call for reform not only shows a lack of respect for the Constitution, but also signifies a broader existential crisis within the Democratic Party as they grapple with their inability to control the judiciary.
