President Joe Biden has officially become the ghost of presidencies past, vanishing from the limelight since he suspended his presidential campaign back in July. Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump has been more than happy to fill the media vacuum, making headlines faster than a press conference can say, “fake news.” It’s almost as if Biden activated his personal blackout mode, leaving all the heavy lifting to his successor while hiding behind his signature aviators.
In a rather low-key move, Biden decided to re-enter the political arena—albeit quietly—by commuting the sentences of 1,500 individuals. These lucky recipients were those serving time in home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sure, it’s nice to give some people a second chance, but does this come off as an attempt to elevate his underwhelming approval ratings? One has to wonder if Biden believes being a forgiving Santa Claus in October might distract from his political invisibility.

Adding to his list of festive benevolence, Biden also issued more than three dozen pardons.
