Joe Biden’s Fourth of July weekend won’t be filled with fireworks and barbecue cookouts. Instead, the commander-in-chief will be out doing damage control, futilely trying to convince voters—and his own party—that he’s the one to lead the country. After an abysmal performance in the first 2024 debate, it’s no wonder Democratic strategists and officials are scrambling to find an exit strategy.
The president’s crack team insists that Biden still plans to stay in the race and will soldier on to the second debate in September. Clearly, even they know it’s hard to put a positive spin on a faltering candidate who’s already showing signs of wear and tear.

Returning from a mini-vacation at Camp David, Biden zipped back to Washington, D.C., as White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tried to rally the troops with announcements of upcoming media events. Biden’s calendar is now filled with attempts to salvage his sagging candidacy: meetings with Democratic heavyweights, an interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC, and a press conference at the NATO summit, all aimed at glossing over his debate disaster.
In a bid to regain lost ground, Biden’s weekend plans include campaigning in battleground states like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. One can almost feel those Democratic governors and lawmakers holding their breath, hoping against hope that the president doesn’t put his foot in his mouth again.
Despite Jean-Pierre’s pep talk about Biden just having a “bad night” and being perfectly capable of running the country, the press remains unsatisfied. They continue to question his health, and rightfully so. The White House released his bill of health back in February, but skeptics aren’t buying it. Jean-Pierre sternly declared there’s no cover-up concerning Biden’s physical and mental faculties, yet the skepticism lingers.
So, as the Fourth of July rolls around, Americans will be watching their fireworks, while Biden will be desperately lighting sparklers of his own, hoping to reignite faith in his floundering campaign. One has to wonder how long he can keep this circus act going before the big top comes crashing down.
