Biden Team Prepares Last-Minute Blockade Against Trump’s Deportation Plans

The Biden administration seems poised to throw a spanner in the works of President-elect Donald Trump’s ambitious deportation strategy even before his administration officially kicks off. After spending a whole campaign promising a no-nonsense approach to illegal immigration, Trump has put the pedal to the metal, appointing Tom “The Hammer” Homan as his “border czar.” The contrast with the previous vice president, Kamala Harris, who was more of a “border no-show,” couldn’t be starker. Homan’s arrival signals that a robust approach to enforcing immigration laws is on the agenda, but the outgoing Biden team appears ready to tussle.

In an apparent last-ditch effort to cling to power, the Biden administration is reportedly contemplating extending temporary protections for hundreds of thousands of immigrants who may be at risk of deportation when Trump sets his plan into motion. This move is akin to a child trying to hide a mess just before the parents get home. Although it might slow down the deportation process, it doesn’t completely throw the brakes on Trump’s plans, which are sure to target individuals with troubling backgrounds first. In a landscape rife with crime and illegal border crossings, starting with the bad apples is a strategy that makes perfect sense.

A closer look at the motivations behind this impending move reveals the characteristic Democratic tactic of making decisions that are more about political maneuvering than public safety. The notion that the Biden administration is merely “considering” this extension sounds suspiciously like typical New York Times-style trial balloons meant to gauge public reaction. The Democrats’ penchant for resorting to creative legal gymnastics is not lost on those paying attention, and while the legality of extending protections could create a myriad of challenges, Biden’s minions might see it as worth a shot to throw a wrench in Trump’s plans.

Illegal immigration had been a significant aspect of the 2024 election, and Republicans received more shove from voters on this issue than their rivals. One can only assume that Biden’s team is keen to maintain a semblance of control over the situation, apparently oblivious to the fact that voters have had enough of their lackadaisical approach. Many working-class Americans are fed up, and this last-minute maneuver may be an attempt to salvage some credibility before Trump returns to the White House.

From the Biden administration’s perspective, particularly if we factor in the unsteady leadership of their aging figurehead, initiating hurdles to Trump’s deportation efforts could be seen as a no-risk proposition. If Trump’s focus remains on tackling known criminals and gang members first, many who would be protected in this potential move wouldn’t even be in the crosshairs of the deportation list. In the meantime, Americans can expect an energetic initiation of enforcement actions aimed squarely at those criminal elements, with Homan leading the charge—because, as he famously stated, it’s about time to get serious about keeping American communities safe.
