President Biden’s Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has released an updated National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) Bulletin that omits a critical threat to national security- the border crisis. The bulletin mentions that “lone offenders and small groups motivated by a range of ideological beliefs and personal grievances” pose a threat to national security. However, there is no mention of any threat posed by illegal immigrants, despite the rising number of illegal aliens who match identities in the U.S. Terrorist Screening Database (TSDB) who have attempted to enter the United States. The bulletin lists other potential targets of violence such as schools, critical infrastructure, faith-based institutions, and racial and ethnic minorities, but it does not highlight the dangers posed by illegal immigration to America.

Lawmakers have voiced their concern about DHS’s failure to include the risks associated with illegal immigration in the NTAS bulletin. The increase in the number of aliens with derogatory information in the TSDB is alarming, and the number of individuals flagged in the terrorist database does not include the record number of “known got-aways” detected by border agencies but not apprehended. In FY 2022, more than 600,000 such “got-aways” entered America illegally, and the number of unknown individuals who illegally entered the U.S. undetected is impossible to know.
Despite the risks posed by illegal immigration, Secretary Mayorkas has not included them in the list of threats facing the United States in the updated bulletin. The omission of any mention of illegal immigration from the bulletin is alarming, considering the vast number of individuals crossing borders illegally, risking national security. The government must take swift action to address the threat posed by the border crisis and illegal immigration, which jeopardizes the safety of all Americans.
