Republican lawmakers are not happy with the Biden administration’s decision to temporarily suspend sanctions on Venezuela’s oil, gas, and gold sectors. According to Politico, the decision was made after negotiations between dictator Nicolas Maduro’s government and the opposition resulted in certain terms for the upcoming presidential election, such as allowing independent candidates and international monitors.
The administration claims that the decision is a response to a positive development and that their goal with sanctions is to bring about change in behavior. However, they also made it clear that if Maduro doesn’t follow through, the U.S. is ready to change or revoke the sanctions at any time.
The easing of oil sanctions on Venezuela will provide Maduro with legitimacy and money to continue his authoritarian reign.

Republicans, on the other hand, are furious. They argue that the Biden administration is looking in all the wrong places for energy and is easing up on the worst regimes in the world. Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska criticized the decision, saying that it’s absurd and a threat to a stable world. She pointed out that Alaska could responsibly produce the resources the world needs, but the administration is treating them as the problem.
Senator Marco Rubio and his colleagues have reintroduced a bill that would ban the importation of crude oil, petroleum, and LNG from Venezuela and Iran into the U.S. Rubio argues that the U.S. should be using its own plentiful supply of oil and gas instead of appeasing dictatorships. Senator Kevin Cramer from North Dakota agrees, saying that relying on adversaries for something as critical as energy is a threat to national security.
In the conservative perspective, the Biden administration’s decision to suspend sanctions on Venezuela is seen as a dangerous move that supports corrupt regimes and jeopardizes American energy independence. They believe that instead of looking overseas for energy, the U.S. should be focusing on domestic production and protecting national security.
