The latest controversy surrounding former FBI Director James Comey has once again exposed the deep political divides and double standards that exist in our nation’s capital. Comey, who has long been a lightning rod for criticism due to his questionable leadership of the FBI and his open hostility toward President Donald Trump, ignited a firestorm after posting an image on Instagram featuring seashells arranged to spell out “86 47.” For many Americans, especially those who support President Trump, the message was clear and deeply disturbing: “86” is well-known slang for “eliminate,” and “47” refers unmistakably to Trump as the 47th President.
The reaction from the Trump administration and its supporters was swift and justified. President Trump himself called out Comey’s post as a thinly veiled call for his assassination, demanding accountability and a full investigation. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service were taking the matter seriously, launching an official inquiry and interviewing Comey about the post. High-ranking officials, including Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, even suggested that Comey should face imprisonment for what they viewed as an egregious threat against the sitting president.
What’s especially troubling is the pattern of behavior we see from Comey and his allies. For years, he has used his platform to undermine President Trump, promote Democratic candidates, and stoke division. This latest “shell game” is not an isolated incident but part of a broader trend in which prominent figures on the left feel emboldened to use inflammatory rhetoric and coded messages, all while hiding behind claims of innocence or ignorance when called out. Comey’s explanation—that he was unaware of the violent implications of “86 47”—rings hollow, especially coming from a former FBI director who is certainly familiar with the weight of words and symbols in political discourse.
This episode also highlights the glaring hypocrisy in how threats against conservative leaders are treated compared to those against liberals. Imagine the outcry if a Trump ally had posted a similar message about a Democratic president. The media would be in a frenzy, and law enforcement would move quickly to prosecute. Yet, when the threat is directed at President Trump, many in the mainstream press downplay the seriousness, and legal experts rush to claim that prosecution would be “fruitless.” Such double standards erode public trust and send a dangerous message that some threats are more acceptable than others, depending on the political target.
Ultimately, the Comey shell post is a stark reminder of the toxic environment that has taken root in Washington, fueled by partisan animosity and a lack of accountability for those who wield power irresponsibly. For the sake of our democracy and the safety of our leaders, it’s time for equal justice under the law, regardless of political affiliation. Americans deserve better than selective outrage and excuses from those entrusted with upholding our nation’s highest standards.
