Perez’s blunt demand put a spotlight on a troubling trend: local leaders who talk tough about “community” but run scared when federal law enforcement shows up.
The deadly encounter, in which a Customs and Border Protection agent fatally shot 37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti during an immigration enforcement operation, set off intense protests that quickly tipped into violence and lawlessness on the streets of Minneapolis. Footage and reports from the scene show angry crowds, clashes with officers, and at least one gruesome attack on a federal officer, prompting Minnesota to mobilize the National Guard to restore order. Ordinary citizens and businesses are paying the price for a political failure that should alarm every American.
Frey and Walz have spent years pandering to radical activists while undermining police and inviting federal pushback, and now their failures are on full display. Instead of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with law enforcement and calming a city, too many local officials reflexively blame the officers doing their jobs while offering sanctuary to vandals and mobs. It is not leadership to lecture and litigate; it is leadership to protect law-abiding residents and enforce the rule of law.
Paul Perez and the Border Patrol union were right to defend their agents as trained professionals carrying out difficult tasks under dangerous circumstances, and they deserve our full support—not political scapegoating. Washington Democrats are already trying to weaponize this tragedy into a political win by threatening to withhold DHS funding, a move that would hamstring the very agencies working to secure our streets and borders. If anything, Congress should be sending more resources and clear backing for agents who put themselves between Americans and chaos.
The country needs clear consequences for leaders who preside over disorder and then pretend the collapse was someone else’s fault. Arrests, prosecutions, and a full accounting of the operation must happen, but the political currency of calling for resignations is earned when officials repeatedly enable breakdowns in public safety. Minnesotans and all Americans deserve leaders who prioritize peace and property over performative politics and press conferences.
Conservative patriots should stand with the men and women of Border Patrol and demand serious accountability from Frey, Walz, and any official who treats public safety as optional. Paul Perez spoke for millions of Americans who want law and order restored, and his call for shameful resignations reflects a larger crisis of leadership on the left. It’s time for elected officials to stop grandstanding and start governing—protecting citizens, supporting our agents, and restoring common sense to our streets.
