That’s right; a staggering 250,000 individuals found their way across the border in just one month! Among those caught, nearly 190,000 were released back into the United States. Fast forward a few months, and the numbers have dropped significantly. By February, that number plummeted to a mere 8,000, and in March, it sank even lower to 7,000. So, what led to this dramatic shift? One thing is clear: the approach towards border enforcement has changed drastically. The previous administration’s policy seemed to prioritize releasing individuals with a “come back later” promise to claim asylum, but now there’s been a shift back towards detaining those crossing the border illegally.

If individuals know they won’t be just released back into the country, the desire to cross is expected to wane.
