Chemical Attacks on Our Ozone: A Looming Health Crisis Above Us

Scientists have discovered that various chemicals are being dumped into our stratosphere and they are destroying the protective ozone layer above our heads. This invisible shield protects Americans from dangerous radiation that could cause cancer and other health problems. While environmentalists have been screaming about climate change for decades, they have ignored this real threat happening right now.

The ozone layer sits high above us in the stratosphere where it blocks harmful radiation from space. When certain chemicals reach this layer, they break apart and release chlorine and bromine atoms. These atoms then go on a rampage, with each chlorine atom capable of destroying over 100,000 ozone molecules before it finally stops.

Recent wildfires have made this problem much worse than anyone realized. Scientists found that smoke particles from major fires like those in Australia can trigger chemical reactions that eat away at the ozone layer. The smoke actually breaks apart protective chemicals in the atmosphere, releasing ozone-destroying chlorine. This created a 5 percent ozone loss across large areas and made the ozone hole over Antarctica 10 percent bigger.

But wildfires are not the only problem we face. The space industry is literally raining down pollution on our atmosphere as satellites and rockets burn up during reentry. These burning spacecraft release aluminum oxide and chlorine gases directly into the stratosphere. The amount of this space junk pollution nearly doubled between 2020 and 2022, and it is now seven times higher than natural levels.

Traditional chemicals like those found in old refrigerators and air conditioners are still causing damage too. These chlorofluorocarbons drift up into the stratosphere where ultraviolet light breaks them apart. Once broken, they release chlorine atoms that destroy thousands of ozone molecules in endless cycles of destruction.

The government response has been typical Washington bureaucracy. They banned some chemicals decades ago with the Montreal Protocol, but new threats keep emerging while regulators play catch-up. Meanwhile, the private space industry keeps launching more satellites without proper oversight of their environmental impact.

This ozone destruction could lead to higher cancer rates and crop failures that hurt American farmers and families. Every ozone molecule destroyed means more dangerous radiation reaching our communities. Our children and grandchildren will pay the price for this environmental negligence.

Americans deserve leaders who will protect our atmosphere from these chemical attacks. We need real action to stop the pollution of our stratosphere, not more empty promises from politicians. It is time to put America first and defend the air above our great nation from these invisible threats.
