The scandal became national when one of the so-called peacekeepers, photographed alongside Governor J.B. Pritzker, was later charged in a deadly smash-and-grab robbery on the Magnificent Mile that left an innocent Chicagoan dead. That picture was quietly scrubbed from state materials, but the damage was done: taxpayers saw the glossy PR and then watched the grim reality unfold.
City and state officials claim these programs reduce shootings, but critics rightly point out glaring failures in vetting and oversight when men with outstanding warrants or violent histories are recruited and fast-tracked into positions of community authority. Hardworking Americans deserve accountable leaders, not glossy press releases and photo ops with people who later face murder and felony charges.
