A real American hero stepped up when it mattered most this past Saturday on Interstate 35 in Iowa. Wisconsin Congressman Derrick Van Orden proved once again why we need more military veterans in Congress. The retired Navy SEAL didn’t think twice before rushing into action to save a badly injured 11-year-old boy.
Van Orden was driving with his wife when he witnessed a horrific crash between a minivan and a semi truck. Instead of just calling 911 and driving away like so many would do today, this warrior congressman turned his truck around. He ran straight toward the danger to help a child who was bleeding to death.
Using his military medical training, Van Orden grabbed socks from his suitcase and turned them into life-saving tourniquets. The boy’s leg was completely mangled and he had severe bleeding in his wrist. Without Van Orden’s quick thinking and brave action, this child would have died on that Iowa highway.
Other good Americans at the crash scene jumped in to help too. They used windshield wipers and car jacks as makeshift splints for the boy’s shattered leg. This is what real Americans do when someone needs help – they don’t wait for someone else to act.
The 11-year-old boy from Leon and his mother were airlifted to a Des Moines hospital where they’re recovering. Van Orden even took time from his busy schedule to visit the child on Monday. That’s the kind of leader we need more of in Washington.
Speaking on Newsmax about the rescue, Van Orden said the response from citizens and first responders made him proud to be an American. He’s absolutely right – this story shows what makes America great. When disaster strikes, Americans don’t run away from trouble, they run toward it.
