Conservative Journalist Attacked and Arrested at Portland Protest

Independent journalist Nick Sortor was physically attacked by a mob at protests outside the Portland ICE facility and then, in a shocking twist, wound up in handcuffs. Video from the scene and official police statements show Portland officers made multiple arrests as fights broke out during the demonstration. The Portland Police Bureau’s release confirms Sortor was one of three people booked on charges of disorderly conduct.

Veteran Fox correspondent Bill Melugin and other on-site reporters documented Sortor being surrounded and confronted by protesters, with footage sparking outrage among conservatives nationwide. Melugin’s reporting and social posts captured the chaotic scene and Sortor’s account that he was defending himself after being swarmed. That on-the-ground reporting contradicts the narrative from woke city leaders who reflexively blame law-and-order responses.

Portland police say their rapid response team arrested three people after observing multiple fights and criminal behavior; those arrested included Angela Davis, Son Mi Yi, and Nicholas Sortor. Sortor was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center and later released, but not before a courthouse-worthy episode of selective enforcement played out on the public stage. Local officials insisting everything was handled neutrally are not convincing ordinary Americans who watched the video evidence.

The federal response was swift once conservatives raised the alarm: Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly ordered a civil-rights review, and Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon was tapped to look into the Portland Police Bureau’s actions. That federal scrutiny is appropriate when a journalist says he was victimized by political extremists and then arrested when he tried to seek help. If Portland’s police are bowing to political pressure or pantomiming neutrality in the face of Antifa violence, they must be held accountable.

Let’s be clear: this was not a spontaneous policing decision so much as a predictable result of years of progressive tolerance for lawlessness and hostility toward conservative voices. Portland’s deterioration has been cheered by the same activists who now claim victimhood when accountability finally arrives. Americans deserve a press that can report without fear of being jumped by mobs or targeted by performative prosecutions.

President Trump and federal officials have made it plain they will not let cities ignore public-safety failures, even threatening cuts to federal aid and deploying additional federal forces to protect federal facilities. Portland’s politicians have spent years choosing political theater over public safety, and now they face the consequences when federal authority is used to restore order. Conservatives should support any lawful effort to protect journalists and federal property from violent demonstrators.

Nick Sortor’s release after being booked on a misdemeanor does not erase the damage done: a journalist assaulted by an Antifa-linked crowd, then treated like a perpetrator by authorities on the scene. This episode is a warning shot to every patriotic American who cares about free speech and public safety: cities that allow mobs to dictate civic life will soon find the federal government stepping in to restore basic order. Expect legal fireworks, accountability demands, and a sustained conservative fight to protect reporters and citizens from left-wing violence.
