The loony liberals in Delaware have done it again – they’re trying to make it harder for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves with a new “dumb and divisive” bill. The Delaware House of Representatives narrowly passed a bill that would force residents to jump through ridiculous hoops and get a state license just to own a handgun. What’s next, a license to own a toaster? The proposal, which passed on a mostly party-line vote, would require folks to complete an approved firearm training course before they can even think about buying a handgun.
Supporters of this nonsense argue that it will reduce gun violence and illegal sales, but let’s be real here – criminals don’t follow the law anyway! This is just another way for power-hungry Democrats to trample all over our Second Amendment rights. Republican lawmakers brought some much-needed common sense to the debate, pointing out that this bill is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine when it comes to stopping actual criminals.

If this terrible idea becomes law, law-abiding citizens will have to fork over their hard-earned cash for training and a permit just to exercise their constitutional rights. And get this – the taxpayers will be on the hook for millions of dollars to set up and maintain this bureaucratic nightmare. Plus, the bill includes a voucher program to cover costs for low-income folks, so now everyone’s being forced to foot the bill for this nonsense. It’s not just unconstitutional, it’s also a colossal waste of money.
Of course, the big cheese himself, Gov. John Carney, is all for this hot mess. He’s even proposing a budget of nearly $3 billion for this dumpster fire of a firearm licensing program. And he’s crowing about the state’s previous gun control measures, like banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. But let’s face it – none of that has done squat to stop bad guys from doing bad things.
But don’t worry, folks – the sensible Republicans tried to put some guardrails on this runaway train by offering an amendment to exempt certain individuals from the training requirement. However, the power-hungry Democrats shut that down faster than a lemonade stand in a rainstorm.
On top of all that, the U.S. Court of Appeals is already gearing up to hear arguments about a similar law in Maryland that was deemed unconstitutional. Even the Delaware Sportsman’s Association, which represents law-abiding gun owners, is ready to slap a lawsuit on this lousy bill if it goes through. But, as always, the sanctimonious Attorney General Kathy Jennings is convinced that this bill will hold up in court. What a surprise!
This “permit to purchase” circus still has to waddle back over to the Senate for another vote before it gets to Gov. Carney’s desk. Hopefully, the senators will come to their senses and realize that this bill is about as useful as a waterproof tea bag. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this nonsense gets shot down before it becomes yet another costly and pointless big government boondoggle.
