Claiming to champion equality, Brownley’s bill is nothing more than an attempt to force their radical ideology onto the American people. Despite the Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, which already guarantees the right of same-sex couples to marry, Brownley wants to go even further and erase any mention of gender in our federal code. This is a blatant disregard for the will of the people and an attack on traditional values.
According to Congresswoman Julia Brownley, “Although the Supreme Court ruled several years ago that same-sex couples have the right to marry, there are many instances where the U.S. Federal Code does not respect their rights.” This is a complete mischaracterization of the situation. The federal code already recognizes same-sex marriages, but Brownley’s bill seeks to erase the very essence of what a marriage is.
This so-called “commonsense bill” is nothing more than an attempt to erase the unique roles of husbands and wives in marriage. By replacing these terms with the generic term “spouse,” Brownley is attempting to strip away the traditional roles and responsibilities that come with being a husband or a wife. This is an affront to the millions of Americans who cherish the traditional values of marriage.
Not only does this bill seek to undermine the institution of marriage, but it also aims to erase gender distinctions in other areas of federal law. The proposed legislation would amend existing laws by replacing the terms “husband” and “wife” with phrases like “a married couple” and “person who has been, but is no longer, married to” depending on the context. This is a dangerous slippery slope that could lead to the erasure of gender altogether.
