Americans who work hard and play by the rules deserve elections that aren’t left to guesswork and political spin, and Gutfeld made the straightforward point that protecting the franchise is not radical — it’s responsible.
The SAVE Act, formally the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections, set standards for identifying and removing noncitizens from voter rolls, and create mechanisms for states to verify citizenship. It spells out acceptable documents and even allows alternative processes for applicants who legitimately lack standard papers, while creating penalties for willful violations. This is exactly the kind of clear, objective baseline Americans expect for an orderly democracy.
Republican backers argue this is a basic integrity measure after years of open-border chaos and reports of noncitizens on rolls; leaders like Rep. Chip Roy and other GOP lawmakers have repeatedly reintroduced and championed the bill as a way to restore confidence in elections. The House passed the measure because commonsense safeguards resonate with voters who want honest outcomes. If Democrats truly believed in secure elections, they’d stop reflexively blocking reforms and offer solutions instead of slogans.
Predictably, Democratic leaders have painted the bill as voter suppression, with high-profile figures likening it to Jim Crow-era tactics and warning it will disproportionately harm marginalized communities. That rhetoric is politically useful for the left, but it collapses under scrutiny when polls show broad support for voter ID and verification measures; fearmongering will not substitute for a debate on competence and enforcement. Voters deserve facts, not theatrical outrage.
Advocates for vulnerable voters point to real administrative problems — think of the Brennan Center’s estimate that millions lack immediate access to birth certificates or passports — and those concerns should be taken seriously and addressed, not waved away.
