Democrats Choose Political Drama Over Government Stability for Americans

On Sept. 30 and into Oct. 1, 2025, Senate Democrats voted to block a clean, short-term funding bill and forced a partial government shutdown that could have been avoided. Senator John Thune rightly called out this blatant hostage-taking, saying Democrats chose partisan showmanship over keeping the government open for the American people.

Republicans put forward a straightforward continuing resolution that would merely extend existing funding levels to buy time for the appropriations process, but Democrats refused to agree unless their massive wish list was included. The House had already passed the short-term funding measure, but Democrats in the Senate filibustered it, leaving everyday Americans to pay the price for political theater.

This is not governance — it’s extortion dressed up as policy. Democrats are demanding more than $1 trillion in new spending and policy changes in exchange for keeping the lights on, a fact that exposes their true priorities: big government and endless giveaways, not the security and prosperity of working families.

Thune and Senate Republicans are right to demand accountability and to call on a handful of moderates to do what’s right and reopen the government immediately; a few votes would end this needless crisis tomorrow. Hardworking Americans deserve representatives who put country over caucus, stop the ransom politics, and get back to focusing on debt, inflation, border security, and the economic threats facing our nation.
