Washington is playing politics with national security at a time when FEMA, TSA and the Coast Guard all rely on uninterrupted DHS appropriations to keep Americans safe and keep the economy moving. Lawmakers who think gutting DHS to score headlines will play well with voters are dangerously wrong and reckless.
Make no mistake: stripping or delaying DHS funding won’t kneecap ICE overnight—ICE and CBP have other funding streams—but it will inflict collateral damage across vital homeland defenses, from airport security to disaster response. Real conservatives support transparency and accountability when there is wrongdoing, but we also know the indispensable role DHS components play in countering fentanyl, human trafficking, and violent criminals. What is needed is tough oversight, not broad defunding that threatens ports, airports, and disaster relief when Americans need them most.
Republican leaders in Congress should stand firm and refuse to let partisan theatrics threaten essential homeland functions; at the same time, they should offer a sensible path to bipartisan fixes that protect civil liberties without surrendering law and order. The GOP must frame this fight as one between sober stewardship of national security and the Democrats’ preference for political stunts that make headlines but endanger citizens.
