In a predictable move, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced on September 12th that there would be an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Unsurprisingly, Democrats were quick to express their outrage over the proceedings. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) held a press conference following the announcement and declared the impeachment inquiry as “absurd.” He criticized the Republicans for wasting time on a “chase, witch hunt” instead of focusing on issues that actually matter to the American people.
Mr. Schumer didn’t stop there. He sympathized with Speaker McCarthy, acknowledging that he’s in a difficult position, but he firmly stated that the Republicans need to be reigned in when they go “way off the deep end.” He didn’t hold back in his disappointment, calling the whole situation “absurd.” It’s quite ironic that the Democrats have the audacity to denounce a legitimate inquiry into the president’s alleged involvement in his son’s business dealings, especially when they spent years obsessing over baseless allegations against former President Trump.
On the other side, Kevin McCarthy defended the impeachment inquiry by pointing out the serious and credible allegations against President Biden. These allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption that cannot be ignored. McCarthy’s announcement directed the House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry, giving them the power to gather all the facts and provide answers to the American public. It’s refreshing to see Republicans taking action against corruption rather than turning a blind eye like their Democrat colleagues.
Not surprisingly, Democrats quickly took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to vent their frustration. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) called the impeachment inquiry a “political revenge tour” and accused MAGA Republicans of launching an illegitimate inquiry. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) followed suit by labeling the inquiry as a “shiny new object” for Kevin McCarthy to distract from the GOP’s inability to pass bills and fund the government. It seems that the Democrats are more interested in playing political games than actually addressing the concerns of the American people.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) played it safe by declining to openly support the inquiry but emphasized the importance of letting the process play out. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), always one to straddle the fence, stated that the inquiry could have been avoided with more transparency, but ultimately left it up to the House to decide.
Of course, there were Republicans who firmly supported the impeachment inquiry. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Ark.) argued that credible allegations of the president’s involvement in a foreign bribery scheme should be taken seriously. Representative George Santos (R-N.Y.) offered qualified support, stating that further investigation may be necessary if sufficient evidence is found.
As the impeachment inquiry unfolds, it is clear that this is just another attempt by the Democrats to distract from their own failures and political shortcomings. It’s a shame that instead of working together to address the issues facing our country, they prefer to engage in partisan theatrics and baseless accusations. The American people deserve better than this circus.
