Democrats Risk Shutdown, Undermine Homeland Security for Politics

The latest showdown in Washington is proof that Democrats would rather score political points than keep the country running. After a highly publicized fatal incident in Minneapolis, Senate Democrats pivoted to demand a laundry list of ICE reforms and used that leverage to extract concessions on Homeland Security funding instead of passing a straightforward short-term funding bill.

Senators did approve a package that funds most of the government, but crucially left the Department of Homeland Security on a two-week leash while negotiators argue about ICE policy changes. That narrow extension creates a real risk of a weekend partial shutdown — a manufactured crisis that will punish federal workers and citizens who rely on essential services.

Let there be no mystery about what Democrats are asking for: uniform codes of conduct, body cameras, limits on so-called roving patrols and other restrictions that would hobble immigration enforcement. These are policy questions to be debated, not bargaining chips to be used to shut down parts of the government.

Worse, the House is out of session, meaning the window for a clean, timely vote closed and ordinary Americans now face the fallout of political brinkmanship. Democrats are clearly betting the media and their activist allies will blame Republicans if DHS funding lapses, even though Democrats themselves are weaponizing the tragedy to rewrite enforcement policy on the fly.

Republican Rep. Chip Roy was right to call this what it is — raw political theater that puts ideological agendas ahead of homeland security and taxpayer interests. GOP lawmakers passed a clean funding measure; instead of joining to keep the government open, too many Democrats chose to press for reforms now, playing leverage games rather than governing.

Patriots know we can grieve and demand accountability while still supporting the men and women who keep our borders and communities safe. Democrats’ rush to kneecap ICE after a tragic episode shows how willing they are to handicap law enforcement for political gain, and conservatives should be louder in defending common-sense law and order.

If Republicans fold in the face of this pressure, hardworking Americans will pay the price — in weakened security, emboldened cartels and more chaos at the border. The right course is clear: demand accountability where appropriate, but do not allow one side’s political theater to tear down the institutions that protect our nation.
