Ted Cruz didn’t mince words on Greta Van Susteren’s show, and he was right to call out Democrats for putting ideological open-border priorities ahead of the safety and jobs of everyday Americans. While hardworking travelers were left standing in hours-long security lines and missing flights, Senate Democrats blocked funding to the Department of Homeland Security rather than back common-sense fixes that would restore TSA operations.
This crisis is no accident; DHS funding lapsed in mid-February after bitter negotiations over immigration enforcement turned into a political standoff, and the consequences fell squarely on the shoulders of Americans trying to travel to work, see family, or go on spring break. Lawmakers in Washington are playing chicken while the rest of the country pays the bill — travelers, airport workers, and small businesses that rely on reliable air service.
Operationally, the results have been predictable and avoidable: TSA call-outs spiked, more than 300 officers have left, and essential screening staff have been forced to work without pay, producing chaotic lines at major hubs. Programs like Global Entry were suspended and PreCheck was briefly in flux, while TSA administrators warned of the real risk of more officers quitting if this impasse continues. The American people should not be collateral damage in a partisan fight over policy.
Conservative leaders — including Cruz — are absolutely correct to frame this as a choice: fund homeland security and keep Americans safe, or indulge a radical Democratic demand set that effectively rewards illegal crossings and disincentivizes enforcement. It’s an outrage to watch Democrats posture about compassion while turning their backs on citizens forced to wait hours at screening checkpoints. Funding DHS fully, restoring TSA pay and staffing, and securing our borders are not mutually exclusive; they are responsibilities of governance that should never be used as bargaining chips.
