The Department of Justice has opened a serious probe into what amounted to a violent, coordinated attack on a Turning Point USA campus event — one more in a string of left-wing eruptions that target conservatives for simply speaking. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche discussed the investigation on national television, warning that the federal government will no longer look the other way while activists mob and intimidate peaceful attendees.
Video and eyewitness accounts from UC Berkeley show a chaotic scene: protesters breaching police lines, clashes with attendees, and multiple arrests as the crowd swelled into outright hostility against anyone wearing conservative insignia. This wasn’t spontaneous campus debate; it was organized thuggery that left students and families fearing for their safety as they tried to exercise their First Amendment rights.
The Justice Department’s Civil Rights component has demanded preservation of campus records and is coordinating with local authorities to identify outside agitators who traveled in to provoke violence. Federal involvement is overdue — universities that tolerate or enable this behavior must be held accountable for failing to protect disparate viewpoints and for allowing radical elements to treat campuses like battlefields.
Blanche was blunt on the air: what happened was pure violence by activists, and the DOJ intends to follow the trail to those who planned and financed these disruptions. Conservatives should cheer a Justice Department that acts to protect speech rather than shield the violent allies of the left, and the Biden-era soft-pedaling of politicized mobs must end.
Make no mistake, this attack fits a pattern. From attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement to organized assaults on conservative tabling and speakers, the left’s violent fringe has been emboldened by permissive local officials and campuses that treat conservatism as terrorism. Americans who believe in law and order deserve prosecutors who will enforce the law equally and bring real consequences to political violence.
At the same time, the country is still grappling with the Epstein files and the political theater around them, a story Democrats weaponize to distract from a law-and-order crisis on campus and on the streets. There are legitimate questions about the scope of Epstein’s contacts and the completeness of previous disclosures, and the public has a right to full transparency without partisan cover-ups. But transparency must not become an excuse for mob rule or a rationale to unleash violent mobs against political opponents.
The Justice Department is also locked in legal fights with hostile jurisdictions like California and Chicago over policies that directly undermine public safety and federal authority. From standing up for girls’ sports to challenging sanctuary policies that obstruct immigration enforcement, the DOJ under this administration is signaling it will litigate where necessary to restore order and protect citizens. Conservatives should support these efforts to reassert federal law when local governments choose politics over public safety.
Patriots who care about free speech and the rule of law must stay vigilant and demand accountability. We should back a Justice Department that goes after the violent fringe, protects lawful assembly, and refuses to let our campuses and cities become lawless playgrounds for radical activists. The country cannot survive if one side is allowed to silence the other with violence and intimidation; it’s time to stand up, hold the culprits responsible, and restore safety for ordinary Americans.
