America deserves to hear the truth bluntly: Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy took his message to Gov. Gavin Newsom on national television after a deadly California crash that authorities say involved an illegal immigrant driver, and he did not mince words about who is responsible for the chaos in the Golden State. Duffy’s appearance on America Reports made clear the federal government is watching how California issues licenses and the real-world consequences of weak enforcement.
The human cost here is gutting — a California father says his little girl was left gravely injured after a semi-truck allegedly driven by an undocumented individual caused a devastating pileup, and communities are rightly demanding answers and accountability. Law enforcement has identified and arrested a suspect in the case, which has only intensified scrutiny over how someone without proper standing was ever behind the wheel of a commercial rig.
Secretary Duffy didn’t issue empty rhetoric; he warned of real consequences, threatening to pull federal transportation funding after auditors found improper issuance of commercial driver’s licenses to noncitizens in multiple states, including California. The Department of Transportation has indicated it may withhold millions unless states stop playing fast and loose with rules that are supposed to protect American motorists.
This administration has also moved to tighten rules nationwide for noncitizens seeking commercial driver’s licenses after a string of fatal crashes exposed gaps that endangered ordinary Americans, forcing federal action where state leaders failed to act. Those policy changes make it harder for foreign nationals without the right status to obtain long-term CDLs unless they meet strict visa criteria and verification standards.
Let there be no mistake: California’s permissive approach — issuing IDs and licenses without rigorous checks and then shrugging when tragedy strikes — is a policy choice with victims. Governor Newsom and his allies in Sacramento can posture about compassion, but compassion does not include putting children on the highway at risk or ignoring victims who ask for simple accountability and common-sense safety.
Hardworking Americans want secure borders, honest enforcement of the law, and leaders who put public safety above political pieties. Secretary Duffy is using the tools of his office to force compliance and to save lives; patriotic citizens should stand with him and demand that California stop turning a blind eye and start repairing the danger that weak policies have created.
