The Empire State Building is facing backlash from Americans after it was seen lit up in the national colors of Qatar, a Muslim nation. This comes just two months after a deadly attack by Hamas terrorists on Southern Israel. The building often lights up in different colors to mark various occasions, so it’s not surprising that they chose to observe Qatar’s “National Day.” However, the timing couldn’t be worse, and many took to social media to express their anger towards the building for its decision.
This lighting ceremony is especially controversial considering Qatar’s history of harboring terrorists. Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund now owns about 10 percent of the Empire State Building, having invested $622 million into the company in 2016. But it’s not just the financial ties that raise concerns. Qatar has been accused of aiding and abetting terrorism for decades, including supporting groups like the Janjaweed, Al Qaeda, and the Taliban. They have also provided support to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks.

Despite vehemently denying these accusations, Qatar’s actions speak louder than their words. The country openly houses Hamas leaders and uses its state-funded channel, Al Jazeera, to spread anti-Israel propaganda. Qatar is also a major funder of Gaza, providing over $1 billion to the Hamas-run territory. Numerous experts have called for Western nations, including the United States, to hold Qatar accountable for its support of terrorism.
Unfortunately, one reason the US often turns a blind eye to Qatar’s actions is because of its oil production. Qatar is a significant oil exporter and a major fertilizer producer, making it economically valuable to maintain friendly relations with them. However, critics argue that it is long overdue to hold Qatar accountable for the misery they have exported through their sponsorship of Islamist terrorism. The decision to light up the Empire State Building in the colors of one of the world’s worst enemies has only added fuel to the fire of these criticisms.
