Four Republican lawmakers from Kentucky, Ohio, Arizona, and Georgia wrote a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray, highlighting concerns about the agency’s investigation into the suspect responsible for planting pipe bombs outside the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Democratic National Committee (DNC), just a day before the Capitol riot on January 6th, 2021.
The letter, addressed to Wray, was sent on Wednesday. It detailed how the Judiciary Committee interviewed Steven D’Antuono, the former Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, who oversaw the investigation into the events at the Capitol, including the pipe bomb attack.
The lawmakers expressed their concern about the use of geofencing technology, which failed to identify the suspect due to corrupted data from one of the providers. They also doubted whether the phone used was a real one, pointing out that it could have been a “ruse” or pretending to use a phone while it is turned off.
The FBI gained access to complete data, but due to the corruption of some data by one of the providers, crucial information has been lost. The lawmakers request that the FBI Director provide them with the necessary documentation to address these concerns.
This move by Republican lawmakers highlights the failure of the FBI to conduct an effective investigation, which could further damage the already fragile trust between the American people and the FBI. Furthermore, this FBI’s inability to identify the perpetrator of the pipe bomb attack raises concerns about the agency’s competence and ability to deal with future threats.
The American people need assurances from the FBI that they will conduct thorough investigations, hold perpetrators accountable, and protect the nation from terrorist threats. The FBI should ensure that such concerns raised by lawmakers are addressed and eradicated promptly.
Unbelievable. Former FBI in charge of Jan 6 investigation tells me phone data that could have been used to identify the person who placed pipe bombs on Jan 5 was CORRUPTED.
Thank you @DarrenJBeattie whose groundbreaking reporting and help was used to formulate my questions. pic.twitter.com/Ga9mK9eSwm

The lawmakers gave a deadline of June 28th, 2023, for the requested information, and it is hoped that the FBI will truly take this matter seriously and provide the necessary information to restore trust in the agency.
