Foreign Truckers Fuel Highway Hazards, US Safety at Risk

America’s highways are facing a crisis. Deadly crashes involving truck drivers are rising, and many blame a surge of foreign-born drivers who can’t follow basic safety rules. Recent tragedies show how loose immigration policies are putting lives at risk.

In South Carolina, an illegal immigrant with a history of deportation killed a college student in a hit-and-run. The driver had been ordered out of the country years ago but was never removed. This isn’t an isolated case. Last year, a deported migrant crashed a semi-truck in Colorado, killing an American. In Texas, a driver from Ethiopia caused a pileup that left five dead.

The problem starts with weak rules. In 2016, the federal government stopped requiring truckers to speak English. Now, drivers who can’t read road signs or warnings are behind massive rigs. States like Texas have seen a 46% jump in commercial licenses, many going to foreign workers. Industry experts say these drivers often lack proper training and undercut American jobs.

Trucking used to be a stable career for U.S. citizens. Now, companies hire cheaper foreign labor—some here illegally—who work longer hours for less pay. American drivers are losing jobs, while highways grow more dangerous. One trucker group says over half the new drivers don’t speak English, making it impossible to communicate during emergencies.

The Biden administration made things worse by pushing to bring in more foreign drivers, including refugees. This floods the market with unvetted workers. Meanwhile, crashes keep happening. Families of victims are demanding change, but Washington isn’t listening.

Arkansas is fighting back with laws to ban non-citizen drivers. Other states should follow. Keeping our roads safe means putting Americans first and enforcing strict standards. Letting unqualified drivers operate deadly machinery for cheap labor is a recipe for disaster.

Conservatives argue this is what happens when open borders meet weak leadership. Letting foreign workers replace Americans doesn’t just hurt jobs—it risks lives. The left’s push for “cheap goods” ignores the human cost of reckless policies.

Enough is enough. It’s time to restore English requirements, deport illegal drivers, and protect U.S. truckers. Safety must come before profits. Until Washington acts, states need to step up and defend their roads from this preventable chaos.
